08 Oct Hurricane Matthew Email Cyber Scams Alert

Governor Nikki Hayley came on the news this morning to alert South Carolina residents about multiple cyber scams that are happening right now targeting vulnerable people in times of crisis. The governor said about 437,000 electric customers have already lost service across the state. During this emergency situation, attackers are preying on people & sending emails posing as aid to Hurricane victims.

The best defense is to delete the e-mail immediately, without responding.

Be especially cautious of emails that :

1. Come from unrecognized senders.

2.  Ask you to confirm personal or financial information over the Internet and/or make urgent requests for this information.

3. Aren’t personalized.

4. Try to upset you into acting quickly by threatening you with frightening information.

Do not click on links, download files or open attachments in emails from unknown senders.

If you believe you have received one of these emails, report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 877-382-4357.
